IRS Security Awareness Tip: Keep Your Information Secure
The IRS and New York State Tax Department want you to know that a shoe box in the back of your closet is NOT the safest place to store tax documents. Though everyone thinks of identity theft as having to do with online security, keeping valuable tax documents – which include your name, address and social security number – unsecured in your home can open you up to increased risk of someone walking off with your information.
