Don't Lose Your NYS STAR Exemption!

If you are a homeowner who currently receives a Basic STAR exemption for your school property taxes, you will need to re-register with the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance to keep getting your STAR exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. This new effort is needed to eliminate fraud and update assessment rolls. A recent State Comptroller's report showed some individuals fraudulently obtain STAR exemptions for their properties, forcing law-abiding taxpayers to unfairly shoulder more of the tax burden.

Key Points Regarding Your Exemption:

  • This is a one-time process that must be completed by December 31, 2013. Basic STAR recipients will NOT need to re-register every year.

  • By now, you should have received a letter from the Tax Department with your personalized STAR code and re-registration instructions. If not, go online or call the Tax Deportment.

  • Registration can be done online at www.tax.ny.gov or by calling (518) 457-2036. The online portal also provides a STAR code lookup feature you can access by providing specific personal information.

  • Senior citizens who receive the Enhanced STAR exemption are NOT affected by this new registration requirement. They must continue to follow current Enhanced STAR procedures by either applying annually to verify income or by enrolling in the automatic Income Verification Program.

Remember this is a one-time re-registration process that must be completed by December 31, 2013. If you have questions about the registration process, contact the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance at (518) 457-2036.
