Scott Sanders and Elliott Lavietes Participate
in Newsday Tax Panel
Managing Partner Scott Sanders, CPA, PFS, CGMA, CFP, CFS, and Tax Director Elliott Lavietes, CPA, of Sanders Thaler Viola & Katz, LLP took part in Newsday's Tax Panel, via live Web chat, on February 26. Nearly 80 people sent in their tax-related questions during the two-hour event.
Mr. Sanders, who will be inducted in May as President of the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) Nassau Chapter, and Mr. Lavietes were on hand to offer free tax advice — along with other members of the NYSSCPA's Nassau Chapter — to residents and small business owners within the community. They addressed topics such as casualty losses as the result of Hurricane Sandy, student loans, education credits and filing as an independent contractor. Small business owners asked how to file as a sole proprietor, which deductions to take and what constitutes as a business loss.
"This interactive panel really went well," Mr. Sanders said. "We performed extensive research in order to answer the individuals' and business owners' questions as accurately as possible. As a result, we were able to give them an answer in clear language that sufficiently provided them the information they needed."
