How to Identify IRS Phone Scams

With continued news reports regarding ongoing IRS scams, it's important for everyone to remember that the IRS will never:

1. Call about taxes owed without first sending a certified letter and/or a bill.
2. Us unsolicited email accounts, text messages or any form of social media to discuss your private information.
3. Demand immediate payment of a bill or outstanding taxes without providing the opportunity to question or appeal the owed amount.
4. Ask for payment through methods such as cash transfer or prepaid debit cards.
5. Require submission of credit card, debit card or bank account information over the phone.
6. Threaten arrest of any parties who do not comply.

In the event that you or a loved one has received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the IRS, it is important to alert the authorities immediately.

For those who know they do not owe taxes, or have no reason to believe that they do, the incident should be reported to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484 and www.tigta.gov, as well as to the IRS directly at www.irs.gov/uac/report-phishing. Information about identifying and reporting New York State tax scams can be found online here: https://www.tax.ny.gov/help/contact/impersonation-scam.htm.

Individuals who know that they owe taxes, or think they might, should call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or New York State Department of Taxation at 518-457-5181 to review your personal tax standings.

Most important of all, it is vital that everyone remember to never, ever provide financial information over the phone to anyone with whom they haven’t already been in contact.
